During the warm summer months, poultry keepers often struggle with red mite which live in the cracks of chicken houses (typically under perch ends). They come out at night and then crawl onto birds for a feed. They start off as very small greyish-white mites that turn into red coloured mites after feeding on the birds' blood.
What are the signs of red mites?
The hens don’t want to go into the house to roost at night as they are scared of being bitten.
The hens become anaemic and their combs go pale
The hens stop laying.
There may be red blood stains on eggs - these are possibly squashed red mites
Some hens may even die

Stress can lead to a lowering of the bird’s resistance and consequently can result in increased disease and mortality.
