| With our modern scientifically
acquired knowledge, we now have a much greater understanding
of the nutritional requirements of our pets and working dogs.
We also know there is a close relationship between diet, health
and length of active life. Although a lot is known about the
nutritional requirements of dogs, in practice some proprietary
brands of food leave a lot to be desired.
Another area we have to address is stress, which can cause
deterioration in health and in acute cases, disease. The
fact that our pets live a very unnatural life can subject
them to stresses that are not always obvious.
There is also now more awareness
of the side effects of drug usage. Whilst the responsible
use of drugs has great benefits, no one could disagree that
the over use of drugs in veterinary medicine in the past,
has caused problems. Most of us are now acutely aware of
the limitations of drugs and indeed of the restrictions
now in place for the treatment of farmed animals.
In canine health we must address
all the areas that affect the well being of our dogs and
their length of lives. If we can pay attention to the development
of the young dog and the management of the mature one, we
can ensure our pet or working dog has the best chance of
a long and healthy life.
A further incentive, if one
were needed, is the aim of minimising the high veterinary
costs associated with owning a dog.
Our
Approach
The Directors of Clover Leaf Farm Services Ltd have been
involved in animal health in farmed animals for many years.
Our main aim is to support the immune system. Our stock
farming background has highlighted the need to deal with
many of the underlying problems that give rise to ill health.
As many of these problems are centred on diet, hygiene,
and general livestock management we can ,by addressing these
areas, support natural resistance against disease challenge.
When any animal has a well functioning charged immune system
the effects can be remarkable. All our products contain
non-chemical actives.
We must remember that although
we may lavish love and attention on our pets, providing
them as best we can with food, shelter and health care,
the environment that we provide for them is a very artificial
and unnatural one. Dogs, for instance, have developed over
time from the wolf, which comes from a very harsh natural
world, a long way from the cosseted world of most pets today.
The link between our pets and the wolf is of course the
working dog, which still exists today. It is a fact that
most working dogs do not have to work as hard for their
living as they are capable of. A Labrador, for instance,
which is far from being our most athletic, breed is capable,
when fit, of covering thirty miles per day! How many of
our dogs get enough exercise? Is round the block enough?
Animal health is to a very
large degree related to balancing food inputs like protein,
energy, vitamins and minerals etc., with the work rate required,
or of course in the case of the growing animal, the requirements
of body development. There are also the enormous numbers
of nutritional compounds, mostly plant derived, that a wild
animal would have access to. The plant compounds present
in the meat of the animals the wolf would have eaten, would
have provided it with all that it needed, not just for activity,
growth and reproduction but for the enhancement of its immune
system.
When we talk of the immune
system we tend to talk simplistically. We have to simplify
the subject because it is so enormously complex. There are
however certain areas and some basic principles which need
addressing when seeking to keep our pets healthy. These
principles are incorporated into our programme of pet health
care, and if followed, will increase the well being of our
pets and lengthen their active lives.
When pets are put onto the
following programme they will utilise their food better
and with the inclusion of Canidex they will receive many
important nutrients not always available in proprietary
brands of pet food.
After your pet has been on
the programme for approximately six to eight weeks assess
its condition. If necessary, cut back total food intake.
It is important always to check your pets weight periodically
as you would your own!
